Obama’s Write Wing

On Saturday, October 4, a very creative event was held at the Manhattan venue, Le Poisson Rouge. That was an evening of Writers For Obama. Some of the best known Indian-American authors gathered together for a high-profile fund-raiser for the Democratic Presidential candidate. Over 500 people showed up to meet authors like Salman Rushdie, Kiran Desai, Jhumpa Lahiri, Manil Suri, Suketu Mehta and others. The event was MCed by director Mira Nair. Just about $56,000 was raised during the event.
Interestingly, the media was barred from the event, which is quite the trend with most ethnic-specific events associated with the Obama campaign. However, photographer Preston Merchant was there and he provided us with an exclusive inside view:

By the way, Preston is working on a great project - chronicling through his photographs the Indian diaspora. Check out his site for more on his fascinating work.

Bose’s Rhythms In Philly

Nandalal Bose is considered one of the pioneers of modern Indian art as he created groundbreaking work in the early 20th century.
Now an exhibition featuring his work is on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art till September 1. Here’s what the Museum has to say about it:

This is the first exhibition to travel outside of Asia showcasing the exquisite and historically groundbreaking work of Nandalal Bose, a major artist who has been called the father of Indian modernism and one of the patriarchs of India’s cultural revival. Organized by the San Diego Museum of Art in a historic collaboration with the government of India and the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, this exhibition includes more than one hundred of the artist’s works. Philadelphia is the only East Coast venue for this major event.

Elemental Art

Tamarind Art Gallery opened in New York about five years back. The man behind it, Kent Charugundla, had, at that time, bought the most expensive Indian painting - by MF Husain. And he was acquiring more and wanted a space to house them and found one in Midtown.

Over the years, the gallery has become…well…more creative. Its latest show, opening August 27, features sculptures by six Indian artists, in a variety of media - bronze, wood, fiberglass. The release announcing the show says:

Many of the works in this show feature whimsical elements including Vaibhav Jain’s work called Crocodile Driving, Bimal Kundu’s Tricycle, and Mehul Patel’s Couple of Birds.
